Michael Mann’s PUBLIC ENEMIES, which premiered last night in Westwood, is glorious and levitational — the most captivating, beautifully composed and freshly conceived gangster movie since BONNIE AND CLYDE. It’s an art film first, a Mann head-and-heart trip second, a classic machine-gun action pulverizer third, and a conventional popcorn movie fourth.

Wells’ track record isn’t 100%, but he was so right-on a few years ago about the brilliant MIAMI VICE, while a majority of ordinarily insightful critics were so, so wrong, that when it comes to Michael Mann, I take him seriously. Couldn’t be happier to hear this about ENEMIES, the trailer for which had me a little worried.
